Silver oxide vs alkaline

LR44 and 357 / SR44 are the same diameter and height. They are not the same battery. The first is alkaline. The second is silver oxide.

Voltage curve

Silver oxide stays near 1.55 V until it is almost empty, then drops quickly. Alkaline starts near 1.5 V and slides down the whole time. Quartz movements expect a steady voltage, so an alkaline stand-in can run slow or stop early.

When alkaline is fine

Toys, LED keychains, cheap calipers, and greeting cards do not care about a sagging volt. Use LR44, LR41, or AG cells there if you want.

When to insist on silver oxide

Any analog or digital watch, a camera, or a medical device that listed an SR / 3xx number. If the old cell said SR44SW, 303, or 357, buy silver oxide.
